Sunnyland Neighborhood Profile

The Sunnyland Neighborhood is located to the northwest of downtown Bellingham. There is a diverse mix of residential homes, commercial buildings, and retail businesses. One of the most prominent buildings is the Assumption Church. Bellingham High School is also located in Sunnyland. Generally, homes to the north are better kept than those in the more densely populated areas in the south part of the neighborhood. Homes in the north are very well kept and show pride of ownership from many of the residents who have made Sunnyland their home for years. Most of the commercial districts are located on Ohio St and extend to the north of Whatcom Creek.

Shopping in Sunnyland stretches from the north end at Sunset Square and extends all the way to the south and the downtown area. Business line James St including Youngstock’s market, Hardware Sales, and Our House Deli. Sunset Square features modern “big box” stores such as Lowe’s, K-Mart, Office Depot, and a movie theater.

The two prominent parks are the recently renovated Memorial Park, just behind Sunnyland Elementary School, and Cornwall Park to the northwest.

Most students living in the Sunnyland area attend Sunnyland Elementary, Whatcom Middle, and Bellingham High School. Some exceptions are Lowell Elementary and Kulshan Middle for those in the south area, and Parkview Elementary fore those in the west areas.
