Mt Baker / Barkley Neighborhood Profile

The Mt Baker neighborhood area is one of the fastest growing areas in Bellingham. Everything from residential homes on the west face of Barkley Hill, to the commercial and industrial growth north of Sunset Drive along Hannegan Road (annexed by the City Of Bellingham in 1998).

Most of the commercial growth is centered around Sunset Square and Barkley Village. These two areas offer a movie theater, several grocery stores such as Haggen, Lowe's home improvement, numerous fast food and local restaurants such as Bob's Burgers & Brew, The Grace Cafe, and many other local boutique shops. These two areas easily meet the daily needs of the Mt Baker / Barkley neighborhoods, as well as Bellingham and Whatcom county residents in general. The Orleans St Post Office is also located across from Sunset Square and Lowe's.

Residential growth has been seen in single family homes, apartments, and condos. Barkley Hill has been the greatest area for home growth. Located on the west face of Barkley Hill, most of these houses were built in the 1990's through today, and homes along the top of the hill have sweeping views of Bellingham Bay, the San Juan Islands, and the Canadian Cascades.

Parks and open spaces are located throughout Mt Baker Neighborhood. Sunset Pond is located behind Sunset Square Shopping Center. An off leash dog area and hiking trails are available and public parking is located on James St.

Mt Baker Park is located at the top of Barkley Hill and offers open spaces and trail access for local residents and the public alike.

Northern Height Elementary School and Squalicum High School are located in Mt Baker Neighborhood, and both offer open spaces for the general public.

Students living in the Mt Baker Neighborhood attend one of three elementary schools; Sunnyland, Roosevelt, or Northern Heights. Most middle school students attend Shuksan Middle School, but a few students south of Barkley Blvd attend Whatcom Middle School. High school students attend Squalicum High School.
