Lettered Streets Neighborhood Profile

The Lettered Streets Neighborhood is located along the old section of the Bellingham Waterfront. Early settlers were drawn to this location because of its proximity to the waterfront, as well as Whatcom Creek. The running water from the creek was the perfect source of power to run the mills.

The homes built along the Lettered Streets were mostly for working and middle class citizens. Homes are small and on small tree-lined lots. Many of the homes built around the turn of the century were ordered straight from the Sears and Roebuck catalogs.

Retails areas can be found along Holly St, Dupont St, Girard St, and Broadway. The Bellingham Theater Guild located on H St. also features numerous production throughout the year.

The historic Pickett House is also located in Lettered Streets. Built in 1856 by Captain George Pickett, who led and infamous charge at Gettysburg in the Civil War. This 150 year old home is the oldest wooden structure in Whatcom County. The Whatcom Chapter of the Daughters of the Pioneers hold tours periodically for the general public.

Shopping is generally located to the adjacent downtown area. Several eclectic stores such as Terra Organica offers residents a wonderful variety of shops and stores. The largest grocery store would be the Haggen on Meridian St.

The Maritime Heritage Park is located at the mouth of Whatcom Creek, along Holly St. The park offers everything from picnic tables, splash fountain, fish hatchery, and local salmon fishing. In October and November, Coho and Chum Salmon run up the hatchery and are easily viewed by the public. Is is also one of the most popular fishing holes for the locals.

Battersby Field and the adjacent paved are near Whatcom Middle School, are owned by the Bellingham School District. When they are not being used the by students for school activities, they are available to the public.

Fout's Park is a small neighborhood park with grassy areas, picnic table, playground, and areas for the kids to run.

Students living in the Lettered Streets Neighborhood attend Parkview Elementary, Whatcom Middle School, and Bellingham High School.
