Cornwall Park Neighborhood Profile The Cornwall Park Neighborhood is names for one of the largest parks in Bellingham, Cornwall Park. Cornwall Park is a mix of medical facilities to the east of the park, and homes and business districts to the south of the park. The busiest commercial areas are around the medical facilities and St Joseph's Hospital, as well as along Meridian St, and down to the Fountain District at the extreme south of the neighborhood. The homes in Cornwall Park are primarily single family homes. Most of the homes feature alley access, and large functional lawns. The homes surrounding Broadway Park are some of the most well maintained and offer beautiful architecture from the the early 20th century. Many of the homes are also back dropped by the trees of Cornwall Park and offer a serene setting. The Roeder Home, built by Victor A Roeder between 1903 and 1908, is located at the end of Sunset Dr, just up from Broadway Park. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this home is now used for community and cultural events. The homes is also available for rent on the weekends for weddings, receptions, and other meetings. The home is currently maintained by the Whatcom County Parks Department. St Joseph's Hospital is also located in the Cornwall Park Neighborhood at the north end of Ellis Street, near I-5. Listed as one of the nations top hospitals, St Joseph's is service by an medical helicopter, and features state of the art medical facilities for cardiology, and many other fields of medicine. The surrounding areas along Squalicum Parkway and Birchwood Ave are home to hundreds of medical clinic, doctors, labs, and clinic. There are 2 main parks in the Cornwall Park Neighborhood. As one might imagine, Cornwall Park is the main park. Located along Squalicum Creek, the park features many large evergreen trees, an open play area, tennis courts, children's play ground, and a new water park / play ground for kids and adults alike. The park also features the city's only disc golf course. The 9 hole course attracts many player through out the year. The second park is Broadway Park. The long narrow and winding park is lined with homes on both sides, and features many grassy areas for local residents. There is a playground at the south end of the park. Bug Lake is another off leash dog training area that also features an unimproved trail along its south bank and an unbridged creek crossing. Bug Lake is just north of St Joseph's hospital. Most all students living in the Cornwall Park Neighborhood attend Parkview Elementary, Whatcom Middle School, and Bellingham High School. A small number of students who live in the southwest areas, attend Columbia Elementary School. | |
