Birchwood Neighborhood Profile

The Birchwood Neighborhood is located in the Northwest part of Bellingham Wa. Historically, this part of Bellingham was on the very edge of town and consisted of a few homes with large lots, as well as small farms. Most of the homes in the western section of the Birchwood Neighborhood are single family residences; however, there are now many apartment complexes along the major roads of Norwest Ave, W Maplewood Ave, and Birchwood Ave.

Shopping in the Birchwood Neighborhood can be found at the Park Manor Center, located at the intersection of Northwest Ave, W Maplewood, and Birchwood Ave. Albertson's grocery, Rite Aid Pharmacy, and many other businesses and restaurants are located in Park Manor Center. Bellis Fair Mall, while not in the Birchwood Neighborhood, is also nearby.

Located in the Northeast corner of the Birchwood Neighborhood, the Bellingham Golf & Country Club has an 18 hole course, featuring an outdoor swimming pool, and event center.

The south edge of the Birchwood Neighborhood is bordered by the Squalicum Creek greenbelt.

There are 2 parks in the Birchwood Neighborhood. Shuksan Meadows Park has a small playground and is near Shuksan Middle School. Little Squalicum Park is at the end of the Bay to Baker Trail which runs through the neighborhood, and features a beach and other natural habitats.

Students living in the Birchwood Neighborhood attend either Birchwood Elementary or Alderwood Elementary. Shuksan Middle School and Sqaulicum High School service the older students. Bellingham Technical College is also located in the neighborhood.
