Alabama Hill Neighborhood Profile

Alabama Hill Neighborhood occupies most of the top and western side of Alabama Hill. Most of the homes in the area were built in the 1960's and 70's and are oriented to maximize the views of the downtown Bellingham area and views of Bellingham Bay. There are no commercial areas or large shopping areas; however, Barkley Village Shopping Area is just a few miles to the north. There you will find larger grocery stores such as Haggen, as well as restaurants and other service oriented shopping.

The Alabama Hill neighborhood is probable most known for its Railroad Trail. This 3 mile long pedestrian/bicycle trail connect Bloedel Donovan Park to Memorial Park...located in the Sunnyland Neighborhood. The large foot bridge across Alabama Street connects the north and south portions of the neighborhood. One can also reach Roosevelt Elementary and Barkley Village on Railroad Trail.

Most of the Alabama Neighborhood area is services by Roosevelt Elementary. Those who live north of Alabama Street attend Whatcom Middle School and Squalicum High School. Those who live south of Alabama Street attend Kulshan Middle School and Bellingham High School.

Area parks include St Clair Park, Whatcom Falls Park, and Highland Park. St Clair Park is located on the southern end of St Clair St and is adjacent to Whatcom Falls Park. A small playground and grassy area is perfect for small children. Highland Park is located on Vining St towards the north end of the neighborhood. Whatcom Falls Park is on the south edge of the neighborhood, and is a favorite for hikers and mountain bikers. Its several mikes of trails are very forested and they run along Whatcom Creek. There is also a spectacular waterfall in the park, offering great views for both hikers and bikers. The park also features tennis courts, playground, fish hatchery, shelters, and basketball courts.
